Western Vs Lakehead February 7 56 65
The streak ended on a cold night in the Thunderdome but the season did not. Western saw its seven game win streak come to a stop against a physical Lakehead group that controlled the margins early and made every possession feel heavy. Western kept fighting kept searching and kept giving itself chances but the early hole proved just a little too deep to climb out of by the final horn
The opening quarter set the tone for how hard everything would be. Western generated looks but nothing came easily and Lakehead used second chances and free throws to build a small edge. Western stayed composed and within striking distance but trailed 18 14 after ten minutes that felt longer than the clock suggested
The second quarter was the toughest stretch of the night. Shots refused to fall and Lakehead used its depth to stretch the lead with patient execution. Western kept defending and competing on the glass but went into halftime down 34 23 knowing the margin did not reflect effort but did reflect how thin the shooting window had been
Western responded the way a confident group does in the third. The pace picked up the ball moved better and Paris Alexander knocked down a pair of threes that finally cracked the lid. Renee Armstrong and Sydney Cowan kept attacking and Western cut into the lead with a stretch that reminded everyone why this team had been rolling. Lakehead answered just enough to hold a 52 43 advantage heading into the fourth
The final quarter turned into a grind. Western pushed the ball cut the gap to four and had multiple chances to make it a one possession game. Armstrong kept driving Cowan found space and the defense stayed locked in. But Lakehead hit timely shots and lived at the free throw line late to close it out 65 56
The numbers tell part of it. Western won the glass and stayed aggressive but shot struggled from the perimeter on a night where every make mattered. Lakehead leaned on bench production and second chance points to keep control of the flow
The streak may be over but the focus does not change. Western has one regular season game left to respond the right way stack a win and head into playoffs with momentum and clarity. Nights like this sharpen teams and Western will look to use it as fuel to close the season strong
