TORONTO, Ont. — The Mustangs offence exploded for 678 total yards in 61-3 win over Toronto on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Michael Faulds called the Mustangs' win at Toronto a "strong performance. We're happy to be 3-0. You know, our goal every single week is to go 1-0. So I thought we played fairly efficient football in the first half. Once again, Jérôme (Rancourt) was spreading it out to many targets. We had four different running backs on the day, have carries and chew up yards, and then Coach (Paul) Gleason and that defence was ready to play today." He also highlighted the connection between Rancourt and Receiver Emmett Charles, saying, "Emmett's super special. His catch radius is unbelievable. Obviously he's got that track background, so we all know his speed and, and you can see week after week he and Jerome are getting that rapport."
The Mustangs' offence generated repeated scoring opportunities by moving the chains through both the pass and run games, finishing with 37 first downs, including 20 rushing and 16 passing. The passing game produced 349 yards and four touchdowns, while the ground game added 329 yards and three more scores on 30 carries.
The Mustangs' defense limited Toronto to 147 total yards and seven first downs, including 41 rushing yards on 15 attempts. The unit also recorded four sacks and a safety, while Toronto was forced to punt 13 times. Special teams added to the Mustangs' field-position and scoring profile, with 203 punt-return yards and Mateo Pasquini going 3-for-3 on field goals with a long of 38 yards while adding seven made point-after kicks.
GAME RECAP
The Mustangs controlled the first quarter with touchdowns on three of their first four possessions and a safety, with Ethan Dolby opening the scoring on a 6-yard run. Rancourt added touchdown passes of 29 yards to Charles and 15 yards to Jackson Taylor, the latter set up by Brennan Keba's 63-yard punt return. The Mustangs outscored Toronto 23-0 in the quarter.
"The corner was pressed up, I went outside in their half. I think he rotated maybe a little late, Jérôme dropped me a perfect ball," said Charles. "This summer to me was just a grind. I was really just working to do everything I could possibly to be back out here. Putting all the work out there, showing everyone the work I've been putting in."
Western added 17 points in the second quarter, starting with an 85-yard drive capped by Rancourt's 14-yard touchdown pass to Charles. The defense kept Toronto off the board, and the Mustangs later answered with Dolby's 4-yard touchdown run before Pasquini hit a 38-yard field goal as time expired. Western finished the quarter ahead 40-0.
"It means a lot, the coaches having confidence in me. I think our whole receiving corps, I think we're all ballers, but I think the confidence Coach (Faulds) has in me just allows me to go out there, play freely, have fun on the field, but also get my job done. It's very appreciated." said Charles
The third quarter centered on a quick Mustangs scoring drive, as Rancourt completed four straight passes and found Jackson Taylor for a 17-yard touchdown before Pasquini added the kick. Pasquini later made a 34-yard field goal, and Oliver Griffiths added a rouge on the final play as Western scored 11 points in the quarter. The Mustangs' defense also kept Toronto off the board in the quarter, with Ayden Smallwood and Nathan Summers combining on a sack during Toronto's final full possession.
"I wouldn't get there without my D-linemen doing their job and the coaches calling the right play. As much as I get the credit for the sack, it's on the defence as a whole," said Summers. "You don't usually get this opportunity to come into Western and start on this defence as a freshman, but I take that opportunity and we roll with it."
Western opened the fourth quarter with a 77-yard scoring drive, capped by Jevaughn Roberts' 2-yard touchdown run after his 34-yard carry moved the ball to the Toronto 2. Toronto answered with a 27-yard field goal, but Smallwood's sack helped Western force a punt after a turnover, and Pasquini later added a 24-yard field goal. The Mustangs outscored Toronto 10-3 in the quarter and closed out a 61-3 win.
