LONDON, Ontario — The Mustangs Men's soccer team scored all five of their goals in the first half in a 5-2 win over Windsor on Friday night.
The Mustangs finished with a 14-6 shot advantage and put eight shots on goal compared with four for Windsor, while Callum Yuile had two goals and three assists within the Mustangs' five-goal output. The Mustangs also limited Windsor's overall shot volume and got through a late stretch of two shots and four corner kicks without conceding.
After the Mustangs' 5-2 win over Windsor, Martin Painter pointed to both the attacking production and areas to improve: "I thought there were some really good, you know, spells in the game. Obviously scoring 5 goals is like really good goals, and there's some outstanding individual performances, so I thought we did a lot well." He added, "Not happy that we conceded twice, um, so there's areas we still have to get better at, but you know it was, it was a good team performance, an important result, um, so yeah," and singled out Callum's all-around contribution: "What an incredible player. What an incredible teammate. What an incredible leader. You know, people look at the goals, but it's not the goals for me. It's the details and the work rate with the ball, without the ball."
The Mustangs scored five times in the first half, led by Yuile's two goals and three assists, to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. Earlier, the Mustangs opened the scoring at 14:40 when Yuile finished a Matthew Rogers assist after Windsor had created the first corner and sent an early shot high. Rogers also made a defensive save on Issam Hassoun's shot at 22:34, and the Mustangs added goals from Panos Tzanetakis at 25:53 and Gavin Goddard at 32:05, both assisted by Yuile, to move ahead 3-0. Windsor pulled one back through Hassoun at 40:03, but Yuile scored again at 41:48 from Rogers after the Mustangs had hit the post, had a shot blocked and earned a corner in the 38th minute. Coby Sankar forced a save in the closing minute before Ennis Bernaus scored at 45:00 from Yuile, sending the Mustangs into halftime with a four-goal lead.
The Mustangs kept Windsor off the board after Ciaran O'Connor's 71:28 goal brought the score to 5-2, defending a late Windsor push to close out the second half. Earlier, the Mustangs generated chances through Goddard, whose shot was saved in the 53rd minute, and Alex Henderson, whose attempt was blocked in the 57th. After Marcus Perri entered in goal at 70:03 and Windsor scored shortly after, the Mustangs came back with attempts from Stefan Musta and Yuile, plus a Musta corner. Goddard, Alan Monyard and Pratik Tamhankar helped the Mustangs create more late pressure, while Perri saved JonPaul Yatooma's shot at 89:45 before the Mustangs defended multiple Windsor corners in the final seconds to finish a 5-2 victory.
