BELLEVILLE, Ont. – The Western Mustangs Open Ultimate team captured the 2026 Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC) Open Division title Sunday, defeating the University of Ottawa 9-8 in the championship final.

The title secured Western an automatic Division 1 berth at the Canadian University Ultimate Championships (CUUC) and capped a 6-1 weekend for the Mustangs.
Western opened the tournament Saturday against the University of Toronto. With the game tied 10-10, the Mustangs scored on universe point, ultimate's version of sudden-death overtime, to earn an 11-10 victory.

In its second game, Western faced McGill University and suffered its only loss of the weekend, falling 15-9.

The Mustangs responded with a 10-7 victory over the University of Guelph before closing out Saturday with a 12-10 win over Wilfrid Laurier University. Western entered Sunday's championship bracket with a 3-1 record.

"When our offence stayed calm, patient and trusted our skill, we were really difficult to stop," captain Chance Langdon said. "We didn't need to force anything. We trusted each other, moved the disc and let the right opportunities develop."

Mustangs Go Unbeaten Sunday

Western opened Sunday with a rematch against McGill and reversed Saturday's result with a 12-10 victory to advance.

The Mustangs then faced Queen's University with a spot in the Open Division final on the line. Western won 10-5 to advance to the championship game against the University of Ottawa.

"Our defence was huge for us all weekend," captain Kiran Grieve said. "Getting those break points takes pressure off the offence and can completely change the momentum of a game. In the final, we needed the defence to give us an opportunity, and they did."

Western Takes the Title on Universe Point

With the Eastern championship and an automatic Division 1 berth at CUUC on the line, Ottawa took an early 3-1 lead before Western scored twice to tie the game at 3-3.

Ottawa regained the advantage at 5-3 and later led 6-4. Western responded with three consecutive points to take a 7-6 lead.

Ottawa scored the next two to move back in front 8-7.

With game time expiring during the next point, Western scored to tie the game at 8-8, forcing universe point, ultimate's version of sudden-death overtime.

Western started the deciding point on defence and forced an Ottawa turnover. The Mustangs took possession and worked the disc upwind for the game-winning score, securing a 9-8 victory and the CEUUC Open Division title.

"There is a lot of mutual respect and trust within this group," captain Andrew Kerr said. "Everyone trusts the person beside them to do their job, and that allows you to play confidently in big moments. On universe point, there was no panic. We trusted each other to make the plays we needed."

The championship completed an undefeated Sunday for Western and secured the team's automatic Division 1 berth at CUUC.

"I'd do anything for these boys," captain William Neault said. "That's the mentality throughout this team. Guys are willing to put the team first, whatever their role is, and do whatever it takes for the guy beside them. Winning this together means a lot."

Western will now turn its attention to the Canadian University Ultimate Championships, Oct. 17-18 in Brampton, Ontario, where the Mustangs will compete in Division 1 against the top university ultimate teams from across Canada.
