The 2013-14 season will be a special one at Western as it marks the 100th Anniversary of athletics at Western University.
Since its founding in 1878 Western students were actively involved in participtaing in different forms of athletic competition. It wasn’t until 1913-14 that students from around campus came together to form one centralized authority for Western’s athletic endeavours.Â
The student athletic councils for Arts, Huron College, Medicine banded together to have all students compete under one banner, beginning one of Canada’s proudest sporting traditions, one that continues to this day.
During the coming year this historic milestone will be celebrated in a number of different ways from Mustangs teams inviting back alumni for special events, to profiles of the people and events from Western’s sporting history on westernmustangs.ca, to the return of Mustang Days in February featuring an entire weekend of Mustangs Athletics competitions and Alumni celebrations.
The 100th Anniversary celebration features a coffee table book honouring 100 years of Western’s sporting history and will be unveiled at Homecoming Weekend. Written by Dr. Bob Barney, founder of Western’s Centre for International Olympic Studies and a former Director of Athletics at Western, Mustangs 100: A Century of Western Athletics features photos and artefacts from the past 100 years of sport at Western.
