Former Mustang Vercheval named to Canadian Football Hall of Fame

HAMILTON, Ont. - Former Western Mustang and Toronto Argonaut Pierre Vercheval will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame later this year.

Vercheval, who is now a television football analyst with RDS is a six-time CFL all-star who spent 14 years in the league with Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal and was named the league's outstanding Canadian in 1999 and the top lineman in 2000.

He played with the Mustangs in 1984, 1986 and 1987 seasons.

Legendary university coach Dave (Tuffy) Knight of Laurier Golden Hawks fame will be inducted into the Hall as a builder, while the three other player-inductees are former star receiver Darren Flutie, linebacker Greg Battle and offensive linemen Rocco Romano.

The official induction ceremony will be held Sept. 14 in Hamilton.

Vercheval played his university football at the University of Western Ontario, where he won the J.P. Metras Trophy top lineman in Canadian university football in 1987. He tried out with the NFL's New England Patriots unsuccessfully, and signed with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1988, beginning his illustrious 14-year CFL career.

After being drafted in the third round of the 1987 draft by the Eskimos, he played five seasons in Edmonton, then moved to the Toronto Argonauts for 4 seasons, from 1993 to 1997 (68 total games).

The Quebec City native was an all star three times and was part of the Argonauts powerful back-to-back Grey Cup winners (1996 and 1997).

He finished his career with Montreal Alouettes, from 1998 to 2001, playing in 78 games and being named an all star 3 more times and winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award in 2000.

Fully bilingual, Vercheval was always a fan favourite in predominately francophone Montreal.

Knight was named Canadian university's coach of the year an unprecedented three times. He compiled a 163-79-4 record as head coach at Laurier University (formerly Waterloo Lutheran) from 1966 to 1983 and the University of Waterloo from 1988 to 1997.

His 153 regular season wins were the most in Canadian university until Western's Larry Haylor topped his record in 2003. Knight led teams to the Vanier Cup in 1966, '68 and '72.
