TORONTO and ORILLIA, Ont. - Rookie Western Mustang Liz Sera won the individual bronze at the Ontario Junior Championships in Orillia, Ont., on Jan. 26 at the Ontario Junior Championships.
The Winnipeg, Man., native and first-year Western student won three matches to secure the bronze, losing to gold medallist Ashley Routliffe of Guelph in a close bout in the 63 kg weight class.
The men failed to break the medals with Austin Van Horne the top Mustang, placing fourth at 66 kg.
Western placed fourth overall in women's team standings along with London-Western teammates Heather Wray and Sam Dunlop placing second at 59 kg and 51 kg respectively.
Meanwhile, at the University of Toronto Open, five Mustangs women took medals with co-captain Katrina Huszarik winning the individual gold at 59 kg.
Keenan Miller, a former Mustang, took gold in the 72 kg weight class representing London-Western and was voted the Outstanding Male Wrestler of the tournament.
Huszarik won four matches, three of them by pin.
Co-captain Jill MCallum (67 kg) and Lesley McCallum (55 kg) each placed second, while teammates Jenn Nguyen and Laura Skopelianos won individual bronze in the 55 kg and 51 kg weight divisions respectively.
“It was a good tournament for us,” remarked coach Ray Takahashi. “We got a lot of matches and brought back some hardware, which always helps with confidence.”
In the men’s division, Andrew Ross and Wolff Schweitzer won silver medals in the 65 kg and 76 kg weight classes respectively.
The Mustangs host the Western Open this Saturday Feb. 2 at Alumni Hall. Action starts at 9:30 am and continues throughout the day into the afternoon.
