Mustangs prepare to fight for playoff lives after 0-1-1 weekend

Oct. 17: Brock 2 Western 2 / Oct. 18: McMaster 1 Western 0

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs are entering must-win territory with games against Guelph (3rd, 6-5-1) and York (1st, 8-2-2) in the final regular season weekend of action in London Oct. 24-25.

Western suffered a 1-0 loss to McMaster on Oct. 18 in Hamilton, Ont., after Garret McConville scored in the second half for the host Marauders.

A day earlier, the Mustangs tied Brock 2-2 in St. Catharines, Ont. Despite firing 18 shots at Brock goalkeeper Toale Ryan, Eric Amato and Mike Sawchuk had the only goals in the important tie for Western. Ryan made 10 saves in the Badgers' net.

Tied 1-1 at the half, Sawchuk put Western up 2-1 but Brock's Tomislav Leko scored in the 82nd minute to spoil Western's bid for a win against the Badgers (1-9-2).

The Mustangs (3-5-4) are currently in a tie for the sixth and final spot in the playoffs with Wilfrid Laurier (3-5-4) - the Golden Hawks' more favourable schedule in the final weekend sees them play fourth-place McMaster and last-place Brock.

The Sunday Oct. 25 contest can be seen live on Rogers TV, Cable 13, in the London market.
