Mustangs sweep the Marauders, 3-0

Oct. 31: Western 3 McMaster 0 (30-28, 25-16, 25-20)

LONDON, Ont. - In the showdown between Western and McMaster, the top two teams in the OUA West in 2008, Western was victorious with a clean sweep of 3-0 (30-28, 25-16, 25-20) on Oct. 31 at Alumni Hall.

After a slow start and a close game (30-28), Western warmed up and took the second set with much more ease (25-16).  The women wrapped up the match in three sets after winning the third game (25-20).

Many of the Mustangs posted strong performances both offensively and defensively.  Sarah Lowry (Calgary, Alta.) had 12 kills and 10 digs, while Caleigh Whitaker (Sharon, Ont.) had 10 kills and 12 digs.  Sara Farrell (London, Ont.) registered 10 kills and seven digs.  Sarah Johnston (Stratford, Ont.) and Elaine Screaton (Calgary, Alta.) both had seven kills and seven digs, plus Screaton had two service aces.

Blocking played a part in scoring with two solo blocks from Screaton, and one each from Johnston and Rebecca Oxland (Vancouver, B.C.).  Assisted blocks came from Farrell (four), Jenna Thomson (St. Mary’s, Ont.) (three), Johnston (two), Whitaker (two), and Screaton (one).

With the win, Western’s record improves to 2-1 and the team remains second in the OUA behind the undefeated Waterloo Warriors (3-0).

Western will travel to Waterloo on Nov. 7 to play Laurier at 6:00 p.m.
