Mustangs beat Golden Hawks in straight sets

Western improves to 3-1 with convincing win over Wilfrid Laurier on Saturday

LONDON, Ont. – A change of venue didn’t make a difference for the Western Mustangs, as they beat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in straight sets at the WLU Athletic Complex on Saturday. The Mustangs managed the same feat the last time these two teams met back in the season-opener on Oct. 16 at Alumni Hall.

With the win, Western improved to 3-1 on the 2009 season, putting them in a tie for third in the OUA West standings – ironically, with the same Golden Hawks. Laurier is a perfect 3-0 against non-Western teams this year.

After taking an extended first set (30-28) in Saturday’s match, the Mustangs took the second, 25-20, and the third, 25-15, in convincing fashion.

Caleigh Whitaker (Sharon, Ont.) led the way for Western, tallying 13 kills in the match. Sara Farrell (London, Ont.) recorded 11 kills and 12 points, while Elaine Screaton (Calgary, AB) had 10 kills for 10 points.

Amara Ilias (Toronto, Ont.) was Wilfrid Laurier’s top scorer with 10 points (8 kills).

The Mustangs are back in action next Saturday, Nov. 14 for a match against the second-place Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-2) at Alumni Hall. Western will then welcome the Brock Badgers (2-3) on Sunday, Nov. 15. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m.
