LONDON, Ont. – In their first trip back to Bernie Arbour Stadium since being eliminated in an OUA semi-final series last year, the Western Mustangs came away with a doubleheader split with the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday night.
The first matchup of the season between these two teams – who are both expected to make a run at the OUA title in 2009 – certainly did not disappoint. It took 14 innings to decide a winner in Game 1 of the doubleheader, as the defending champion Marauders squeezed out a 4-3 win in the seventh extra inning (doubleheader contests are seven innings in length).
Despite the disappointing loss, the Mustangs bounced back in Game 2 to earn an 8-0 win. Right-hander Matthew Grasby tossed 6.0 shutout innings for the victory.
Overall, manager Mike Lumley was pleased with the effort of his squad, who improved to 4-1 on the ’09 campaign.
“We played really well,” Lumley said. “Pitching did an outstanding job. I mean, we gave up three runs in 21 innings.”
The Mustangs are back in action Saturday, Sept. 12 for a doubleheader against the Guelph Gryphons at Labatt Park. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
