The Mustangs men's soccer team went 1-0-1 on the first weekend of OUA regular season play, defeating nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier 2-0 on Sept. 13 after tying Waterloo 0-0 on Sept. 12.
On Sept. 13 at TD Waterhouse Stadium, former Laurier Golden Hawk Ryan Avola (London, Ont.) scored two minutes in, curling a low shot along the turf to complete a great Mustangs counterattack to give Western the 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, Mark Pocrnic (London, Ont.) scored the insurance goal. Kosta Viglatzis (Toronto) earned the shutout in goal for the second straight game making one save and challenging well for long Laurier stretch passes to key the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Viglatzis stopped one shot in the 0-0 tie with Waterloo on Sept. 12 at the Greek Hellenic Club in South London on Sept. 12.
Western visits the always dangerous York Lions on Sept. 19 and then travels to play Guelph on Sept. 20.
