Smith leads Marauders past Mustang women

Jan. 23: McMaster 71 Western 66

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team struggled to find their shooting touch falling to the McMaster Marauders 71-66 Sat. Jan. 23. The Mustangs, now 10-5, drop into a second place tie with McMaster in the OUA West with the loss.

The Mustangs shot poorly from three-point range going 3 for 18 and McMaster's Taylor Smith made them pay on the other end netting 23 points and adding 9 assists. Jacklyn Selfe(Burlington, Ont.) led Western's offensive charge with a double double scoring 16 points with 10 rebounds. Katelyn Leddy (London, Ont.) added 15 points and 7 rebounds. McMaster got off to a hot start going up 28-19 in the first quarter.

Both teams could not find their offensive touch in the second quarter with Western outscoring McMaster 12-5 for the second frame to cut their deficit to 33-31 at half. The teams came out and traded baskets in the second half with McMaster taking a 56-52 lead into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs cut into the lead and had a chance to steal a victory late in the fourth but McMaster hit some key buckets late to secure the win.

The Mustangs come back to London and host the Waterloo Warriors on Wed. Jan 27 at 6 p.m. Admission is free for students with their Student ID card.
