A healthy Mustang team defeats Ryerson in three

Jan. 23: Western 3 Ryerson 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18)

LONDON, Ont. - A strong and healthy Mustang womens volleyball team secured their fourth place standing in OUA West by defeating the Ryerson Rams in three games at Alumni Hall Jan. 23.

Free from injury and illness the Mustang starters came out strong taking the first set 25-14. The momentum continued as the Mustangs took the second set 25-18, and the final set 25-18. Jacqueline Robinson (Vancouver, BC) led the team with 11 points and nine kills, while player of the game Claire Morrow (London, ON) lead the team with strong defence and 14 digs.

Although head coach Dean Lowrie commented that the blocking on the part of the Mustangs could have been improved, the return of the starters in combination with the rest of the team helped build the victorious momentum.

“There was a sense of urgency and excitement; the starters were back and excited to play,” Lowrie said.

As the team looks to continue their winning streak, assistant coach Dave Edwards insists that a full team effort will be essential to finish off the regular season strong.

“Now that we have a healthy line-up we have to continue the hard-work and teamwork in practice and on the court,” Edwards said.

The Mustangs hope to extend the winning streak when they host York in Alumni Hall on Jan. 24 at 1p.m. Western’s last regular season home games are Jan.29 versus Windsor and Jan.30 against Guelph both at 6 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
