Oxland, Screaton power Mustangs past Marauders

Oct. 23: Western 3 McMaster 1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17)

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs got their first win of the season beating the McMaster Marauders 3-1 on Saturday night at Alumni Hall.

Western won the first set 25-13 and lost the second 25-21 before winning the last two 25-19 and 25-17.

The Mustangs are now 1-1 on the season.

Elaine Screaton led the Mustang attack with 16 kills, while Rebecca Oxland added 12 kills and two aces.

Western got out to the early lead in this set maintaining a slight advantage throughout the set. McMaster was forced to call a timeout after the Mustangs' lead extended to 18-10 but Western would continue their run and pull away 25-13 to take the first set.

McMaster would respond in the second set and would battle back and forth with Western throughout the set. McMaster held a slight 16-13 lead before Western was forced to call a timeout when down 20-15. They could not respond and the Marauders took the set 25-21.

The third set was similar to the first as Western got out to the early lead and held it throughout the set. McMaster could never recover and the Mustangs took the third set 25-19.

The Mustangs held small leads throughout the fourth set, up 8-7 at the first technical timeout and then 16-12. They would then go on a run thanks to some solid hitting and McMaster would be forced to call a timeout with the lead stretched to 20-13. Jenna Thomson would win it on an ace as the Mustangs took the set 25-17.

Western's next game will be at Windsor on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. They have four games on the road and they will not be back in action at Alumni Hall until Nov. 26 at 6 p.m.
