Kidd nets pair as Mustangs beat Waterloo 6-5 in overtime

Oct. 30: Western 6 Waterloo 5 (OT)

LONDON, Ont. – Defenseman Sydney Kidd (Sunridge, ON) scored two key goals for the Western Mustangs as they beat the Waterloo Warriors 6-5 in an exciting overtime game on Saturday at Thompson Arena.

Both of Kidd’s points could have been highlight-reel goals – one a powerful shot from the point blasted in the top right corner, and the other a beautiful double-deke backhanded goal.

It was a very close game and both teams battled hard for all three periods. The Mustangs (3-3) came out strong in the first period keeping the puck in the Warriors’ end for the first few minutes of play, and immediately got a few shots on goal. Once Waterloo finally broke out of their end, they almost scored on a two on one, but Olivia Ross (Huntsville, Ont.) made a nice glove save.

Waterloo opened the scoring about halfway through the first period on a powerplay goal by Nicole Herbert, (Toronto, Ont.), and about a minute later, Mandy Harrop (Simcoe, Ont.) netted another.

Western’s first goal was scored by Carly Rolph (Guelph, Ont.) and assisted by Aoife Cox (Hamilton, Ont.) and Tara Cation (Caledon, Ont.). Meghan Hewins (Burlington, Ont.) scored the second goal to tie up the game.

While Kidd was the star of the second period with her two goals, both teams really picked up the pace this period. Kathryn Roy (Owen Sound, Ont.) scored a goal for Waterloo, leaving the score at 4-3 for Western at the end of the period.

Warrior’s Herbert scored her second goal of the game at the beginning of the third period, and Kelly Toms (Ennismore, Ont.) tied the game for Waterloo just a few minutes later.

With just over one minute left in regulation time, desperate for a goal, Coach Higgins pulled Ross from the net. Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) shot the puck in and led the Mustangs into an overtime period.

Michelle Saunders (Oakville, Ont.) scored the game-winning powerplay goal for Western just a few seconds into overtime - on a slap shot from the point, which was assisted by Cation and captain Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.).

The game was pretty evenly matched, but Western outshot Waterloo 24-19.

Next up, the Western Mustangs hit the road to face Laurier on October 31 at 7:30 pm.
