LONDON, Ont. - The undefeated Western Mustang men's rugby team will play the McMaster Maruaders for the 2010 OUA Championship title on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at Fletcher's Field in Markham, Ont.
Western beat McMaster 14-8 in regular season action, but Mustang head coach Steve Thomas is convinced the Marauders will be seeking revenge this weekend.
"McMaster will be better prepared this time[...]they will want to avenge that defeat and we will want to maintain our record," says Thomas.
With Mike Talbot (Lucan, Ont.) out with a broken leg, the team's key to success is to remain focused, allowing the injury to act as an incentive to bring back the OUA title to Western.
"The key will be being better focused and the desire to win, especially as we lost one of our senior players last weekend," says Thomas. "This gives the guys extra desire to win for their missing buddy."
This weekend, the Mustangs will also be avenging last year's OUA Championship loss to the Queen's Gaels. Thomas is optimistic that his team has the focus and desire to claim a championship title this year.
"We were in control of the [2009 OUA Championship] game and we threw it away due to a couple of mistakes," says Thomas. "It was a bitter pill but we are a more focused team this year in all departments."
This marks the sixth consecutive trip to the OUA Championships for the Mustangs; Western has claimed two of the past five titles. This is the first time Western has met up with McMaster in the OUA Championships since 2007, where the Mustangs took the title in a close 23-22 game.
Western will look to defeat McMaster and take home the OUA Championship on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at Fletcher's Field in Markham, Ont.
