LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs battled back from a double-digit lead but fell 67-65 to the Carleton Ravens on Friday night at Alumni Hall.
The Ravens led by 10 entering the final frame but the Mustangs came back thanks in part to 22 points and 10 rebounds from Matteke Hutzler and 14 points from Jacklyn Selfe.
The Mustangs are now 4-1 on the season and will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night. There will be a tribute to Doug Hayes, former Mustangs' coach, on Saturday evening following the women's game at 5 p.m at Alumni Hall.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter with Carleton scoring from three-point range and Hutzler adding eight points in the paint for the Mustangs. Carleton would hold a slim 15-13 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Ravens would go on a 13-1 run to start the second quarter but the Mustangs would step their defence up and hold Carleton at 29 points for the last five minutes of the half. The Mustangs would use their 10-0 run to cut the Ravens' lead to three points at 29-26 at the half.
Carleton would respond after half moving the ball well on offence and frustrating the Mustangs' offence with stifling defence. The Ravens would extend their lead to 10 as they were up 51-41 after three.
The Mustangs battled back in the fourth quarter to make it a close finish. After a Carleton turnover with 15 seconds left, Selfe hit a three-pointer to make it 64-63 Carleton.
Carleton's Jessica Resch hit her two free throws and Laura Dally hit a layup to make it 66-65 with 2.1 seconds left. But guard Alyson Bush would seal the victory for the Ravens by hitting her first foul shot and then missing the second one on purpose to let time expire. She finished with 20 points.
