LONDON, Ont. - Junior duo Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) and Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) combined for two goals and three assists as the Western Mustangs men’s hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 6-3 at Thompson Arena on Nov. 20.
Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.), Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.), Turkiewicz, Jason Furlong (London, Ont.), Snow and Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) scored for Western.
Ryerson’s got goals from Julian Zamparo (Woodbridge, Ont.), Jesse Chidwick (Caledon, Ont.) and Matt Schmermund (Calahoo, Atla.).
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 11-0-2
The first period was a back-and-forth battle between both teams.
The Rams notched the first goal two seconds after a Mustangs penalty had expired with only 40 seconds left in the frame as Zamparo wired a shot from the top of the circle past netminder Anthony Grieco (Brampton, Ont.).
Western started the second period with much more authority notching four goals in the frame. Farmanara scored the Mustangs first goal as he cycled high across the top of the circle and released a rocket of a shot past Rams goaltender Kori Coelho (Toronto).
Midway through the period, Western broke out of their end at full speed. Baker controlled the puck and streaked down the right wing full tilt.
Baker beat the Rams defender in a foot race and picked the bottom left corner of the net for a 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs two top scorers Turkiewicz and Snow broke out on a two-on-two opportunity. Snow hit Turkiewicz with a pass up the center of the ice eliminating one defender from the play. Turkiewicz walked in and beat both the defenceman and Coelho. Turkiewicz and Snow combined have 20 goals and 21 assists in 13 games.
Turkiewicz set up Westerns fourth goal, throwing the puck on net from along the boards. Furlong was planted in front of the net and batted the puck in off Coelho.
Snow scored his tenth goal of the season after throwing the puck on net from behind the goal line. The puck bounced into the net and Western led 5-1 halfway through the third period.
Ryerson attacked the Mustangs zone and Grieco stopped the initial shot but Chidwick crashed the net and capitalized on an open rebound.
Western’s Lamb countered the Rams’ goal less than one minute later, shoving the puck through Coelho’s legs, increasing the score to 6-2.
The Rams refused to back down and less than 30 seconds after Lamb’s goal, Schmermund earned the final point of the night on a Mustangs defensive mishap.
Head coach Clarke Singer commented on Snow’s role as the team’s point leader.
“He’s a guy that really stirs the point offensively for us, he’s got a great shot, he’s real good on the powerplay so he’s an important guy for us,” Singer said.
The Mustangs outshot the Rams 41-34 and both teams were scoreless on a combined 11 powerplay opportunities.
Western will travel to Queen's University on Nov. 26 for an 8:30 p.m. contest.
