LONDON, Ont.. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team is on a three-game win streak after winning their game against the Guelph Gryphons, 70-47, in the first game of Jam the Gym held at Alumni Hall on Feb. 6.
The Mustangs fought hard for an early lead and succeeded in the opening five minutes of the first quarter, sinking a total of four three-pointers resulting in a 22-9 lead.
It was a tougher start to the second quarter for the Mustangs. They let the Gryphons sink a three pointer to start the period and then with 3:36 left in the quarter, the Gryphons were catching up, pulling the score to 29-23. Guelph eventually took the lead with a three pointer bringing the score to 30-29. But with a last burst of energy in the final seconds of the quarter, a Jacklyn Selfe (Burlington, Ont.) three helped the Mustangs to push through to take back the lead, 32-30
With the score so close in the third quarter, both teams were fighting for the lead. Early on in the quarter, the Mustangs were barely able to keep their lead with a score of 33-32, and this proved to be difficult throughout the rest of the quarter. Western fought back hard to gain an eight-point lead late in the third quarter. In the last minute, Western extended the lead to 48-37.
Early in the fourth quarter, Western rode the support from fans, powering through the fourth quarter to crushing Guelph 70-47.
Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.), who currently sits second in the OUA scoring race, had an unbelievable game with 34 total minutes and 21 points. Kelly Moulden (Dundas, Ont.) was unable to play as she is out day to day with a knee injury.
