LONDON, Ont. - Success is nothing new for the Western Mustangs men's baseball team, having won the 2009 OUA championship and four of the past five championships as well. The Mustangs have four games on the road this weekend to kick off their season and try to continue this success in 2010.
Western will play a doubleheader at Waterloo on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. and then again at McMaster on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Coach Mike Lumley is confident in the ability of his team going forward this season.
"We have a strong team this year with a good corps of returning players and some surprising newcomers to add to our squad," Coach Lumley stated.
When asked about what returning players Coach Lumley believes will lead the team, he believes in more of a team-oriented approach.
"I don't want to focus on one guy, it all depends on that day and who shows up to play," Lumley said, "as a team we are well balanced, with speed, power and good fielding and pitching, we might be more balanced than ever before."
The Mustangs had a number of 2009 OUA All-stars in Andrew Thomson, Bruce Crane, and Jordan Townshend, who are all returning this year. The players were not the only ones recognized for last season's success as Coach Lumley was honoured with OUA Coach of the Year for the 2009 season.
Western will play their first home game on Friday, Sept. 17 against Laurier. Come out and support the Mustangs as the doubleheader starts at 5 p.m at Labatt Park in London.
