Shutout win over Lancers continues perfect season for Mustangs

Sept. 15: Defence, Murdoch help team to fourth shutout of season in five games

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's soccer team remained perfect after a 3-0 shutout over Windsor on Wednesday Sept. 15.

Andrew Murdoch of Burlington, Ont., earned his fourth shutout in five games to improve to 5-0-0 on the season. Eric Amato of Toronto netted his third game-winning goal of the season, converting on a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

Vince Caminiti and rookie Alex Martins also tallied Western's other goals.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 5 in CIS in the Sept. 14 poll, outshot Windsor 6-3. All of the Windsor's shots came in the second half. The game featured six yellow cards - three to each team.

Caminiti's insurance goal came as he dribbled through a number of Windsor defenders and hit the bottom corner of the net to beat veteran netminder Dan Mendonca. Martins scored his goal in the 76th minute, taking advantage of an open shot in Windsor's 18-yard box.

Western travels to Oshawa to face the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sept. 18 at 3:15 p.m., then plays at Laurier on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. before returning home to host McMaster and Guelph on Sept. 25 and 26 respectively.
