LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's soccer team remained perfect on the year with a dominating win over UOIT on Saturday afternoon.
Niko Mavrikos, a sophomore from Victoria, B.C., netted all five goals for the Mustangs in the 5-0 win. Andrew Murdoch of Burlington, Ont., recorded the shutout for Western, already his fifth shutout so far this season.
With the win the No. 5 Mustangs now improve to 6-0 in OUA play. Western has only allowed two goals so far on the season.
Mavrikos opened the scoring just three minutes into the game putting away a nice through ball from Andrew Chan with a low shot to the back post. The score remained 1-0 through to the half.
In the second, Western came out looking to increase the offensive pressure and Mavrikos answered the call. He scored four more goals in the 48th, 55th, 63rd and 65th minutes. This gave him four goals in just 17 minutes.
Coach Rock Basacco said he was thoroughly impressed with Mavrikos' performance this past week.
"I believe it is a Western record to score five goals in one game, he has seven goals in two games," Basacco said.
Next up for the Mustangs are the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in Waterloo. Western will play its next home game, against McMaster, on Saturday Sept. 25 at 3:15 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
