LONDON, Ont. - Andrew Chan scored the game winning goal after a great set up pass from Alex Martins as the Western Mustangs defeated the McMaster Marauders 3-2 at TD Waterhouse Stadium on Saturday.
In the men's contest, Western also had goals from Niko Mavrikos (Victoria, B.C.) in the 6th minute and Eric Amato (Toronto) in the 56th minute. They improve to 7-0-1 and are ranked No. 3 in the CIS.
Western led 1-0 on the Mavrikos goal - a great volley off a John Morrissey cross from the corner - before Aaron Boothe tied the game in the 36th minute for the Marauders.
Amato gave Western a 2-1 lead in the 56th minutes. Mustangs midfielder Ian Meaghar was taken down in the 18-yard-box by McMaster's Rob Schlosser, and Amato's penalty kick was stopped by Marauders keeper Matt Grant, but Amato slid in to tap in the rebound on the two-yard line to put Western up by one.
Mavrikos nearly put Western up 3-1, but his volley sailed just wide.
Minutes later, McMaster substitute Vincent Ientile scored to tie the game at 2-2 in the 80th minute, redirecting a free kick from Dan Niksic which bounced ackwardly past Mustangs keeper Andrew Murdoch (Burlington, Ont.).
Chan scored with a beautiful shot into the top corner in the 85th minute to lift Western to the win.
Alex Martins and Mavrikos had chances to score an insurance goal in the final minutes, but missed their opportunities.
The Mustangs host Guelph at 1 (women) and 3:15 p.m. (men) on Sunday afternoon at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
