Campbell uses glove and bat to propel Western to doubleheader sweep of Brock

Sept. 26: Game 1 - Western 5 Brock 1 / Game 2 - Western 3 Brock 2

LONDON, Ont. - Ian Campbell went 3-for-4 in Game 1 of a doubleheader win over Brock and followed up that performance with a game-changing defensive play in a Game 2 win as the Western Mustangs swept the Badgers by scores of 5-1 and 3-2 on Sunday at Labatt Park.

GAME ONE BOXSCORE / GAME TWO BOXSCORE

Campbell added two RBIs in Game 1 and Adam Paish tossed 8.0 scoreless innings as the Western Mustangs downed the Brock Badgers 5-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Western broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs off Brock starting pitcher Nick Baljeu. With two outs in the frame, back-to-back run-scoring singles by Campbell and Daniel Goldberg put the Mustangs in front 2-0.

The Mustangs put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of an RBI single by Shawn Robinson and a Brock throwing error. The two runs gave Paish a comfortable 4-0 lead and ended the afternoon for Baljeu, who surrendered just five hits over 7.0 innings.

Paish tossed a scoreless eighth inning before giving way to Daisuke Suzuki in the ninth. Brock pushed one run across the plate in the ninth, capitalizing on a pair of walks and a Western error to make the final score 5-1.

In Game 2, an error by Brock’s third baseman proved costly in the bottom half of the second as the Mustangs pushed across a pair of run to even the score 2-2. Brock jumped on the board with single runs in each of the first and second innings off Western starting pitcher Paul Lytwynec.

Capitalizing on another Brock defensive miscue, Western took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Shawn Robinson that scored Goldberg.

Brock threatened to tie things up in the top of the sixth, but a sparkling defensive play stymied the rally. With the bases loaded and one out, Jeff Kosta lofted a fly ball to left that Campbell settled under for the second out of the inning. Matt Kissel tagged up at third and attempted to score the tying run, but Campbell’s throw to catcher Jonny Kim was right on target and retired Kissel easily for the third out of the inning.

Lytwynec picked up the win as he tossed a complete game and scattered nine hits while striking out six.

The Mustangs return to action on Oct. 2 with a pair of games versus Guelph.
