Mustangs continue sweep streak with win over Thunderwolves

Jan. 30: Western 3 Lakehead 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16)

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs completed their fourth consecutive sweep in a 3-0 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-16.

From the very first set, Western took a commanding lead and would not allow Lakehead to catch up.  Maria Krahn (Winnipeg, Man.) had 8 kills and setter Jenna Thompson had 13 assists.

In the second set, Western once again took the lead with powerhouse middle Kelly Frittenberg (Caledon, Ont.) putting up four kills. Midway through the set, Lakehead went on a run, but it wasn’t enough. Western took the second set 25-16. Christie-Lee Wilson (London, Ont.) was able to add five kills to Frittenberg’s four. Western had 35 total attacks in the second set.

The third set was much like the first two and Western was able to capitalize on Lakehead’s frustrations. The Mustangs wrapped up the final set 25-16. Elaine Screaton (Calgary, Alta.) contributed three kills and Western had a total of 34 attacks.

The Mustangs improve to 12-3 on the season.

Players of the game were Thomson for the Mustangs and current OUA points leader Vanessa Chorkawy for the Thunderwolves.

Western hosts Laurier on Feb. 4 and Waterloo on Feb. for the last home games of the regular season. Both games start at 6 p.m.
