LONDON, Ont. -- Western Mustangs goaltender
Josh Unice has been named the male OUA Athlete of the Week for the period January 16-22.
In the most anticipated series of the men’s hockey season thus far, Unice, a second-year goaltender for the No. 4 CIS-ranked Western Mustangs, shut the door all weekend against the No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves, turning aside all 56 shots he faced to lead the Mustangs to a pair of 1-0 victories on the road.
The shutouts were the second and third of the season for Unice, who yielded nothing despite facing 14 short-handed situations during the two games. With the wins, the Mustangs (18-2-2), who entered the weekend two points ahead of Lakehead (16-6-0) in the OUA West, emerged six points up on their division rival. Unice was named a star during both wins, which were played in front of more than 3,000 fans at Fort William Gardens each night.
The Holland, Ohio native, who is now 12-3 on the year, currently owns the OUA’s best save percentage (.934), and is second with a 2.09 goals against average.
The Mustangs are back in action this Thursday night, Jan. 26, for another road game – this time against the Windsor Lancers at Windsor Arena. Western will then return home next weekend for a rematch against Lakehead on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7:35 p.m. at Thompson Arena. For tickets,
