Mustangs oust Golden Hawks 3-0

Today the Mustangs took on the Laurier Golden Hawks and won 3-0. Last time the Mustangs faced the Golden Hawks they tied 2-2 in a last minute decision.

Western started strong, dominating play, and outrunning Laurier. At the eight-minute mark Eric Amato was fouled in front of the Laurier eighteen. Amato was awarded a kick and scored the first goal for the Mustangs.

At 20 minutes the Mustangs’ defensive line became a little sloppy, but quickly resumed control and proceeded to keep the play on the Laurier side to dominate the first half.

At 29 minutes, Laurier flippantly gave away possession by passing a ball directly to Western’s Vinny Caminiti. Caminiti, taking full advantage, sent a perfect ball through the middle to Rudy James. James broke through Laurier’s defense and on a great run scored the second goal of the game.

The first half ended with Western leading Laurier 2-0.

The second half began with just as much action as the first. At five minutes, Caminiti stole the ball in the center and assisted Christian Douglas on a breakaway. Douglas shot, but the Laurier keeper answered with an impressive save. This particular play was an upset for the Stangs, as many people thought that it could have easily been a goal.

At 8 minutes Western was awarded a free kick on the right side. Rudy James was able to get a touch on the ball to score Western’s third goal of the game.

Western played with epic pace and created many chances for themselves. The team captured the victory and won 3-0.

Tomorrow, Western will play Waterloo at 3:15pm.
