Weekend Preview: Mustangs vs. Toronto Varsity Blues on the road

Friday, October 26 vs. Toronto Varsity Blues

The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team continues their season on the road this Friday, October 26 against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Coming off of a strong pre-season and successful home opening weekend that featured a sweep against the Brock Badgers 3-1 and a close three set loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Mustangs gear up to play a competitive Toronto squad. Captain Rebecca Oxland led the Mustangs on Saturday with 18 kills on 37 attempts and 21 points in a four set match against Brock, while Stephanie Krueter led the Mustangs on Sunday with 10 kills on only 18 attempts and committed no errors against the nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Mustangs hope to carry their success to Toronto and defeat the Blues on their home court.

Friday’s game is the home opener for the Varsity Blues who hold a competitive 12-1 pre-season record and lost their regular season opener to Ryerson 3-1. The Blues have an experienced roster this season and welcome back many all-star players to the team. Many veteran players participated in provincial and national competitions including fourth-year player and outside hitter Alexandra Hudson. Charlotte Sider, a third year right side also competed at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Halifax. Sider was also a 2011-2012 OUA All-Star and averaged 3.05 kills per set in 2011-12. Setter for the Blues, Malena Rapaport was selected to be part of Canada’s national B team, and is back for another strong season with Toronto. Fifth-year veteran twins Shannon and Katrina Rossall gear up for their final season with the Blues. Shannon was designated an all-star in both of Toronto 2012-13 pre-season tournaments.

Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Toronto’s Varsity Athletic Centre.
