Western earns 20-5 victory over Paladians

The Western Mustangs rugby team prepared for the OUA playoffs with its final regular season game today versus RMC Paladians on the road in Kingston, Ontario. Despite higher scoring games in the past weekends, the Mustangs dominated play in the first half and maintained pressure in the second to secure a 20-5 victory at Navy Bay 5 field.

Mark Denton started the action for Western with a three-point penalty goal at 25:00. Teammate Charles Beatty followed up five minutes after with a high-scoring try, giving the Mustangs an early 8-0 lead. Denton then managed a conversion kick in the same minute for his fifth point of the game.

In the second half, Mustang Rob Cutting gained considerable ground with a try at 10:00. RMC pushed for a comeback and managed a try ten minutes later by lock Clarke O'Reilly. Mike Turnbull then took momentum back for the Mustangs with another try at 32:00. Turnbull sits seventh in the OUA for 14 conversions and two tries. Three Mustangs rank in the OUA top 12 heading into the postseason. The final score remained 20-5 for the Mustangs.

Western now sits third in the OUA going into playoff play. RMC dropped to seventh position. The Mustangs have 298 points scored versus 85 against, providing an impressive rationale for playoff contention.

The Mustangs now prepare for the OUA quarterfinal on October 31, against teams still to be determined from further regular season play. The final OUA standings will indicate which team hosts the playoff game. Stay tuned for further information for the 2012 OUA Rugby postseason.
