Mustangs drop tough five set game to Varsity Blues

Box Score TORONTO, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team hit the road for their first away game of the 2012-13 season heading to Toronto Friday night to take on the Varsity Blues. In a hard-fought contest the Mustangs fell to the Varsity Blues in five close sets losing 3-2 earlier this evening.

Western head coach Dave Edwards said it was “an excellent match with many positives, however, having a lead 12-7 in the fifth set and then losing (12-15) was disappointing.”

Leading the Mustangs was Rebecca Oxland who had 19 kills on 46 attempts and a game high 21 points while Stephanie Kruter added 10 kills and eight digs.

Set scores were 23-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-22, 12-15

Reminiscient of their game against Ottawa on Sunday, Friday’s game was a point-for-point affair with neither side able to gain much of an edge over their opponents. The Varsity Blues edged out the Mustangs in the first set by a 25-23 score before taking the second set 25-18.

Despite being down two sets a fired up Western squad pushing ahead of Toronto in a competitive set winning the third game 26-24. The Mustangs continued their roll, taking the fourth set as well by a 25-22 score.

With everything coming down to a fifth set the Mustangs and Varsity Blues went back and forth in the set’s opening stages before Western took a 12-7 lead. Unfortunately for the Mustangs the Varsity Blues went on an 8-0 to take the final set 15-12 to claim victory three sets to two.

The Mustangs now challenge the Waterloo Warriors at home on Friday, November 2 at 6:00 p.m. and the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m. Games can be observed at Alumni Hall.
