Shut out for Skoko as Mustangs draw Ridgebacks

Today the Western Mustangs played the OUIT Ridgebacks at TD Waterhouse stadium and drew 0-0.

The water had subsided from last night’s torrential downpour at TD Waterhouse, but the temperature had dropped well below 10 degrees. In shorts, jerseys, and the odd long sleeved Under Armour performance shirt with matching leggings, the Mustangs ran vigorously to stay warm.

Mustang Pat Mroczek played with style as he demonstrated some professional, but ill-fated bicycle kicks. Western’s Alex Lewis played particularly well today, supporting John Sarjeant and Matt Elias on the left side. Alex Lewis displayed tenacity in his pursuit of the ball and stamina equivalent to that of a marathon runner.

UOIT goalie Matt Caldaroni showed great strength with his kicks that often travelled almost 90 yards and Justin Gordon ran up and down the field, his legs spinning like a windmill.

In the extra play of the first half player Pat Mroczek received a red card for a rogue elbow in the UOIT box while setting up for a corner. UOIT’s Justin Gordon received a yellow card for tackling Western’s Alex Lewis.

At the end of the first half the game was drawn 0-0.

The second half began and Western was still a man down. Despite the team being a player short, Western keeper Ivan Skoko compensated incredibly well, making save after save and playing with gusto as he challenged for the ball.

At 64 minutes Western managed to plunk a ball into the net, but it was ruled offside.

At 65 minutes Christian Douglas received a yellow card and within seconds teammate Vince Caminiti received one as well.

In the final minutes of the game Oliver Richardson managed to get a shot on net, but came up short and the Mustangs drew 0-0 with the UOIT Ridgebacks.

The Mustangs play next on October 13th at an away game against Laurier at 3:15pm.
