PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Holding an 11-1 record after the end of the CUFLA regular season, the Western Mustangs men's lacrosse team claimed first place in the CUFLA West and earned the right to a bye straight to the semi-finals of the Baggataway Cup. On Saturday afternoon Western faced off with the Brock Badgers, who defeated Bishop's earlier in the tournament to advance to the semis.
The game was the lowest scoring event of the CUFLA season with the two teams battling through 80 minutes tied at 3-3. The first overtime would solve nothing before Ryan McCrory would put Western ahead with about 2 mins left in the 2nd OT frame. Brock would get the ball with 45 seconds left and call a timeout. The shot that ensued by number 50 Travis Gibbons from outside would be stopped and Western would kill the clock to also advance to the final.
Western has not been in the final since winning it in 2001. McGill has never won the Baggataway cup, but, has had one appearance in the final in 2008 against Guelph.
The Championship game for the coveted Baggataway Cup will be played Sunday at 1pm at Trent's Justin Chiu Stadium.
