PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The McGill Redmen took on the Western Mustangs in a battle of two huge franchises in Canadian Field Lacrosse. It was a classic final of East meets West which shows the strength of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association. It was also going to be the sixth-year in which there would be a different winner taking home the CUFLA title.
With only less than a minute played the Redmen scored first through Taylor Slipperly and the Mustangs replied straight away with there own goal through Ryan McRory and just before the end of the first period McRory scored his second of the game and the Mustangs took their first lead of the game.
In the second period both goalkeepers were kept busy but it was Western who extended the lead by two goals from Scott Watson. The Redmen could not reply with any goals and the Mustangs went in at halftime up 3 - 1.
The start of the third period saw McGill close the gap to one goal on a goal from Ryan Besse. The Redmen then scored another through from Leland de langley to tie things up. The Mustangs pulled away before the end of the third period thanks to a goal from Kyle Childerhose (Ingersoll) to make the score Mustangs 4 - Redmen 3 going into the final period.
With the Mustangs looking strong going into the fourth and final period and leading 4 - 3 over the Redmen it was Kyle Robinson of the Redmen that scored straight away to once again tie the game. With the game locked at 4 - 4 a lot of credit goes to both goalies as they pull off save after save to keep the score line so low. The Redmen pulled away to make it 5 - 4 through thanks to Connor Goodwin and extended the lead by two goals with a goal from Slipperly. The game looked to be out of Mustangs reach until Watson recorded his third goal of the game and with Redmen looking like they were going to seal the Baggataway Cup Mustangs Sam Neeb scored and took the game into overtime.
The score was locked at 6 - 6 and two periods of four minutes were played and with the both teams hesitant in the first period of over time it was the Redmen’s Jishan Sharples who scored the winner with the last shot of the game to crown the Redman 2012 Baggataway Champions.
