Mustangs topple Gryphons to move onto OUA Finals

The Mustangs’ men’s rugby team were more than prepared for the challenge of the playoffs defeating Guelph on the road on Sunday in an OUA Semi-Final by a score of 21-15.

Western was quiet during the first half of play, and remained scoreless going into the second half trailing the Gryphons by three.

The Mustangs more than made up for their lack on offence in the second half scoring 21 points in the final 40 minutes. Mike Turnbull accumulating more than half of Western’s total points, contributing 11 points with try and two penalty goals. Sebastian Pearson and Jeremy McCarty also both scored tries to round out the scoring for the Mustangs.

Guelph scored 12 points in the second half on a conversion kick and two tries, but it would not be enough to overcome the Mustangs’ offence. Guelph’s Joe Newman scored two points on the conversion kick, while Braden Stubel and P. Sinel each scored five points on tries.

With the win against Guelph, the Mustangs have secured a spot in the gold medal game against Queen’s at Nixon Field in Kingston. The two teams have squared off once already this season, with Western pulling out a 22-20 victory over the Gaels in September on Queen’s home turf.

The gold medal game takes place next Sunday, November 11th at noon.
