Mustangs overpowered by Marauders

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont.-  After splitting their games last weekend—losing to Queen’s on Saturday but managing to bounce back defeat the Royal Military College Paladins—the Western Mustangs women’s volleyball headed on the road tonight to take on the McMaster Marauders.

Despite a strong third set, the Mustangs lost 3-1 bringing their regular season record to 8-6.

With 16 points, the Western Mustangs sit in fifth place in the OUA regular season standings—just behind the Ryerson Rams with 14 points—and head into tomorrow’s match with hopes of getting back in the win column against the second place York Lions.

Set scores were 15-25,19-25, 25-22, 8-25

Leading the Mustangs was Stephanie Kreuter with 13 kills on 28 attempts and 12 digs. Captain Rebecca Oxland earned nine kills, six digs and 13 points in the game. Libero Stephanie Kantzos contributed with 12 digs of her own.

During the first set the Mustangs trailed early and were unable to get back into the match. The set ended with McMaster taking it 25-15.

The Mustangs fought valiantly in the second set, and while they managed to keep the match closer, once again McMaster was victorious, taking the set 25-19.

However, the Mustangs proved the third time is a charm as the team battled back and took the third set by a score of 25-22. Down only one set, white and purple, for a moment, looked as if they could swing the game's momentum in their favour.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs seemed to lose all that momentum when the fourth set began. McMaster came out strong and completely dominated the set, winning 25-8.

Leading the Marauders was Shannon McRobert with 10 kills on 15 attempts with a game high 17.5 points.

The Mustangs head back on the road tomorrow when they will face the York Lions in Toronto at 6:00p.m.
