Box Score TORONTO, Ont.— After losing to McMaster last night, the Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team headed to Toronto tonight to challenge the nationally ranked York Lions for the first time this season. Despite spliting the first two sets, the OUA second place Lions were too much for the Mustangs, and won the match 3-1. The loss brings Western’s regular season record to 8-7, which is enough for fifth place in the OUA.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 13-25

Rebecca Oxland with a team high 16 points, earning 16 kills and 10 digs. Libero Stephanie Kantzos contributed 22 digs to Western’s losing effort.
After losing last night, the Mustangs stepped onto the court hoping to reverse that trend tonight. In the first set, the Mustangs and Lions rallied back and forth with no team giving up points easily. The set remained close, but York managed to climb a few points ahead of Western at the end to take the first set 25-22.
The next set was a different story as the Mustangs challenged the nationally ranked Lions during every point. Western took control of the court and was able to top York by four points, earning them the second set by a score of 25-21.
Tied with one set apiece, the two teams stepped back onto the court ready to earn the win. Despite taking the previous set, white and purple lost a little speed and fell for the second time to the York Lions by a score of 25-19.
Down two sets, Western fought to challenge York, but did not have enough power to top the momentum the Lions had gained, and fell behind early. Unable to muster a comeback, the Mustangs dropped the fourth and deciding set by a score of 25-13.
Leading the Lions was Brandie Wilkerson with a game high of 18.5 points with 16 kills.
The Mustangs return to home court next weekend when they will play against the Ryerson Rams in Alumni Hall on Friday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m.
