STRONG START TO NEWEST MUSTANGS

The Western Mustang Ultimate teams are over halfway through their seasons and things are going well for the Open and Women's squads. The Women's team, captained by Erin Bussin and Stephanie Wong, got off to a strong start in Hamilton at the Steeltown Classic. With a record of 5-2, including big wins against Waterloo and Queen's, the Mustangs finished 2nd, only losing once in group play and in the finals. At the same tournament, the Open team came off a strong Saturday looking to do some damage on championship Sunday but fell short, finishing 3-4 and coming in 7th place.

The next trip for both teams was to Kingston, Ontario for the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships. Our Women's side came in seeded third and looked to build on their strong showing in Steeltown, but missing a couple of key players to injury and club commitments, the team struggled and finished 3-5. Meanwhile, the men had another strong Saturday, playing themselves into the championship bracket. Facing early adversity with a loss to U of T, they bounced back with strong play from Iain Mackenzie and Vince Wang to win their last 2 games, including a run of 7 straight points to win against Carleton, placing second in their pool. Unfortunately, Sunday was more of the same with a 4-3 finish and again coming 7th, albeit in a much deeper tournament. With 2/3 of their seasons complete, both teams are eyeing the Canadian University Ultimate Championships in Ottawa, Ontario from October 18-20. The Women's team is looking to put Eastern's behind them and get back to the form displayed at the Steeltown Classic and the Open team is attempting to finally put a full tournament of good Ultimate together. Both squads have been working hard to bring some hardware back to Western in their first year as a varsity club. Go Stangs!
