Mustangs stampede to victory against RMC

LONDON, Ont. -- The Western Mustangs men's rugby team continued their momentum from last week's big win against the Waterloo Warriors as they returned home to face off against Royal Military College Friday evening at Alumni Field, defeating them 76-3.

The squad exploded to victory with Joshua Bald kicking off, scoring the first try five minutes into the game. Bald went on to score two more tries as the game continued . An intense first-half left the Mustangs in the lead 31-3.

Head coach Steve Thomas humbly commented, "Once we settled down, we played exceptionally well, we rushed a little bit, which we have a tendency to in the first 10 minutes, but as our nerves settled we played more concise".

The team boldly advanced with tries coming from several more members of the squad including third-year Demetris Christopher, who scored his first try of the season. With a combination of consistent conversions and strong defence in the second half, Western was a force to be reckoned with and added seven more tries before the match came to an end.

RMC made a valiant attempt to compete against the Mustangs, scoring a penalty goal in the first half, but as the game continued it became harder to catch up as Western stampeded to their highest scoring win this season.

Pleased with today's big win, Thomas said the team, "plans to stick with the fundamentals," going into next weekend's matches.

The Western Mustangs continue their hunt for gold as they move on to play their last regular season game against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 at 9:30 a.m., the Mustangs will host Michigan's Davenport University for a pair of exhibition games at Alumni Field.
