Mustangs bounce back for a 2-2 draw against Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont. - Goals from Alex Lewis and Taso Bujouves helped the Western Mustangs men's soccer team overcome a quick start by the Waterloo Warriors and earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams have faced off on the pitch already this season as the Mustangs defeated the Warriors 4-0 in late August in their first regular season game of the year. After being shut out by the Mustangs a few months earlier it was clear that the Warriors hit the field with something to prove as they provided strong competition for the Mustangs in today's action.

With the draw, the Mustangs hold a 6-6-3 record in the OUA West Division standings while the Warriors sit at 1-11-3 on the season so far.

The Warriors opened up the first half of the contest at full speed, posting the first goal of the game just nine minutes into the action when Jesse Bean found the back of the Mustangs net. With the 1-0 advantage, the Warriors continued to apply strong offensive pressure and were able to further their lead when Adam Craig netted the second goal of the game to put the Warriors up 2-0. Despite the two-goal disadvantage the Mustangs persevered and were able to find their rhythm, counting their first goal of the game with ten minutes left in the half when Lewis put one past the Waterloo keeper.

In the second half the Mustangs continued to battle hard to cut the Warriors lead. Their efforts paid off when Bujouves racked up the second Mustangs goal of the game to tie the score with 25 minutes left in the final half. Both teams fought to try and secure the win but as the clock ran down to zero both teams walked off the pitch with a 2-2 draw.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday, October 20 at 3:15 p.m as they face off on their home turf at Huron Flats Field against the Guelph Gryphons. Sunday's match-up marks the final game of the 2013 OUA regular season.
