WINDSOR, Ont. – A first half goal allowed the Windsor Lancers to defeat the Western Mustangs men's soccer team 1-0 on Wednesday night at Windsor's Alumni Field.
Â
Western now holds a 4-4-2 record and sit in sixth place in the OUA West only four points behind the fourth place Lancers at 5-2-3. Wednesday's game was the second meeting of the year between Western and Windsor as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at TD Stadium on the opening weekend of the regular season.
In the first half the Mustangs fired off four shots on Lancers goaltender Dejo Olagbegi while Windsor's offence had two shots on Mustangs goaltender Adam Majer. Despite being outshot the Lancers were able to put themselves onto the scoreboard when Micheal Pio netted the first and only goal of the game at the 31-minute mark.
As the game continued into the second half, the Mustangs battled hard to try and cut the Lancers lead, and were able to put strong pressure on Windsor's defence. Although Western was able to record eight shots on Olagbegi throughout the second half, unfortunately for the Mustangs none of them resulted in goals and the match concluded in a hard-fought 1-0 loss for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday, October 6, at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Guelph to face off against the CIS No. 5 Gryphons.
