Mustangs shut out by Marauders

LONDON, Ont. - The Mustangs men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the OUA West third-ranked McMaster Marauders on Western's home turf Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Mustangs hold a 4-6-2 record in the OUA West division while the Marauders sit in third place in the OUA West with a record of 9-2-2 on the season.

"I thought the boys played really well," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. "We had some really good chances, we moved the ball well and defended extremely well. We're just struggling to put that ball in the net."

In the opening half of the match the Mustangs and the Marauders battled strongly with both teams fighting to take the early advantage. McMaster's Kody Kazda was able to get the Marauders onto the scoreboard first as he netted a goal just after the thirty minute mark, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Despite Western's efforts to regroup and try to cut the Marauders lead, they were unable to put themselves onto the scoreboard going into the break.

In the second half both sides continued to apply strong offensive pressure and were able to generate a number of scoring opportunities.

McMaster's Nathaniel Morris was able to further the Marauders lead late in the half as he scored the second goal of the game at the 83-minute mark to set the score at 2-0. The Mustangs battled down to the dying minutes of the match but were unable to hit the back of the net and when the final whistle blew the Marauders walked off the pitch with a 2-0 shutout victory over the purple and white.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, October 12, as they gear up against the Brock Badgers at 3:15 p.m. on Western's Huron Flats Field.
