Box Score TORONTO – The Toronto Varsity Blues got two goals from second-year forward Taylor Day and withstood a late charge from the Mustangs on the way to a 2-1 victory over the Western Mustangs women's hockey team at Varsity Arena on Friday night.
Â
Stacey Scott potted the Mustangs' only goal of the game with 24 seconds left in the third to give Western a chance to come back but Toronto goaltender Nicole Kesteris was able to keep the puck out in the dying seconds. The second-year backstop made 25 saves against the Mustangs on Friday, continuing her hot start to the season and giving her an impressive .956 save percentage and 1.15 goals against average on the season.
Â
Scott's goal late in the third came with the help of
Carly Rolph and
Cassidy Gosling and denied Kesteris what would have been her second consecutive shutout and her third goalless game of the year. The Mustangs fired a game-high eleven shots on the Toronto goal in the final frame after only firing 14 through the first 40 minutes of play.
Â
Kelly Campbell was once again a big factor for the Mustangs on Friday, stopping 30 shots in the game to keep Western within striking distance in the back-and-forth affair. Her strong performance against the Varsity Blues helps keep her near the top of the league in both save percentage at 0.964 (1st) and goals against average at 1.19 (3rd).
Â
Taylor Day's goals were her second and third of the young season and both came with the help of line-mate Kelly O'Hanlon, whose two helpers on Friday give her five assists and six points in seven games. The first goal came almost 12 minutes into the first period while the game winner came just over half way into the second.
Â
The win moves Toronto to within one point of Western in the OUA standings with a game in hand as the Mustangs sit third with 12 points and the Varsity Blues now sit fourth with 11. Western will have a chance to put some breathing room between themselves and Toronto on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Â
The Rams were also in action Friday night, dropping a 3-1 contest to the Windsor Lancers for their fifth loss of the season.
Â
Both teams will look to get back on the winning track Saturday when they meet for the first time this season. Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m. and fans can watch the action live via the Rams webcast.
