Mustangs capture Silver Medal at OUA Championship

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's rugby team captured the silver medal after falling to the Queen's Gaels 40-10 in the OUA Championship Gold Medal Game on Saturday afternoon.

The Western squad defeated the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Semi-Finals last weekend to advance to Saturday's championship game and were looking for gold and redemption after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to the Gaels in their last meeting on Western's Homecoming weekend. It would prove not to be, however, as the Gaels offence could not be stopped despite a strong start from the Mustangs.

Fourth-year Mike Turnbull put Western on the board first with a penalty goal nine minutes into the first half. Although Queen's responded with a try and conversion, Western answered back as Ade Ojo scored Western's only try of the game and Turnbull added the conversion to give the Mustangs a 10-7 advantage at the end of the first half.

The second half was a different story as Queen's quickly gained momentum and controlled the field, scoring five tries and four conversions with no response from the Mustangs. Despite their efforts, the Western squad was unable to catch the Gaels and the 2013 OUA Championship saw Queen's defeat the Mustangs 40-10 to capture the gold while Western took home the silver.

Both squads dominated the OUA this year and were the top two teams in Ontario throughout the season with Queen's finishing the regular season with an 8-0 record and Western posting a 7-1 regular season record with their only loss coming from the Gaels.
