TORONTO - A first period goal from Clare Sabine would stand as the game winner on Saturday afternoon as the Ryerson Rams squeaked out a 1-0 shutout victory over the Western Mustangs at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in OUA women's hockey action.
Â
Ryerson backstop Alex Armstrong made sure that Sabine's unassisted effort would be all that her team needed on the afternoon, turning aside all 25 shots she faced to earn her first win and shutout of the season. In three appearances this year Armstrong has established an impressive 1.89 goals against average and 0.934 save percentage, proving why as she stumped all Western efforts to score.
Â
Olivia Ross got the call in net for the Mustangs and made the most of the opportunity, only allowing one goal on 27 Ryerson shots. After allowing the goal from Sabine midway through the first, Ross shut the door and gave the Mustangs a chance to get back in the game, stopping seven shots in the second period and 11 in the third.
Â
Looking to reward Ross' effort, the Mustangs threw everything they had at Armstrong in the final frame including a game-high 14 shots but were unable to slip one by the Toronto native. It was a frustrating result for a team that has fired 50 shots on net in the last two games while only coming away with one goal to show for it.
Â
The win on Saturday afternoon marks Ryerson's third of the young season and moves them into tenth in the OUA while Western remains in third with a record of 6-3-0. The two teams will not meet again until January 31, 2014, when Ryerson will travel to London to take on the Mustangs at Thompson Arena.
Â
As for the near future, the Mustangs will have a chance to re-group after their two losses while they wait for their next games on the weekend of November 9 and 10. Western will travel to St. Catherines on the Saturday to take on Brock before moving to Guelph to take on the Gryphons on Sunday, November 10.
