A 9-5-0 start to the year has the Mustangs sitting in the middle of the OUA West at the midpoint of the season, although while most other OUA teams sit stagnant until January the Mustangs will have an opportunity to gain some ground when they head to Michigan on December 16 to seek revenge against the Windsor Lancers as part of the SiriusXM Hockeytown Festival at Detroit's Comerica Park.
Â
The game represents an opportunity for the Mustangs to avenge a 5-1 home loss to the Lancers on November 29 and to move into a tie for third place with Toronto and Ryerson with 20 points. Windsor and Western's November matchup saw the Lancers pummel
Josh Unice with 16 shots and four goals through a period and a half before adding an empty netter with four seconds left in the third frame.
Â
Heading into the game against Windsor, the Mustangs are led offensively by
Daniel Erlich,
Matt Clarke, and
Zach Harnden, who hold the top three sports in Western's scoring race with 25 points, 22, and 19, respectively. Erlich began the season with an eleven game scoring streak that was snapped on November 23 and saw him accumulate a total of 16 points over that span, catapulting him into a tie for second in the OUA's midseason scoring race with Nipissing forward Cam O'Donnell.
Â
Clarke and Harnden have also been consistent for the Mustangs all season, both putting up more than a point per game and sitting second and first, respectively, in Mustangs' goal scoring at eight and 10.
Stefan Salituro is next on the scoring list, totaling six goals and 10 points through 12 games. Going into Western's matchup against Windsor on November 29, Salituro had three goals and three assists in his last five games and, although his streak was snapped against the Lancers, he added an assist on December 1 to stay hot.
Â
The Lancers, on the other hand, will look to Spencer Pommells and Drew Palmer to spark their offense against the Mustangs as the duo have combined for 34 points through Windsor's first 15 games. Pommells has six goals and 12 assists for 18 points while Palmer has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points of his own.
Â
Unlike the Mustangs, who have only one goal from their defense all season, the Lancers have received a fair share of their offense of the blue line, getting 13 goals from their defense through 15 games. Seven of those goals have come from sophomore defenseman Kenny Bradford while another four have come from Julian Luciani.
Â
In goal, the Lancers are led by Parker Van Buskirk, who picked up the win on November 29 in Windsor's 5-1 victory against the Mustangs. Van Buskirk has been a workhorse for the Lancers this season, playing in 14 of Windsor's 15 games and picking up wins in ten of those. He currently has a .912 save percentage and a 2.69 goals against average compared to a .956 and a .907 save percentage from Western's Greg Dodds and Josh Unice, respectively.
Â
Puck drop will be at 6:30 p.m. at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. Tickets can be purchased at the Western Student Recreation Centre or at the door on game day.
