Weekend Preview: Mustangs face huge matchup with Queen's

Following two big wins at home last weekend against Ryerson and Toronto, the Mustangs are looking to keep the momentum going as they face the Waterloo Warriors in an away game on Saturday and host Queen’s in their final regular season game at Thompson arena on Sunday. The Mustangs captured four big points last weekend and look to repeat their success this weekend.

Defenseman Katelyn Gosling and Forward Stacey Scott led the Mustangs offence last weekend with a total of three points each. Gosling is currently tied for sixth place in the CIS with 18 assists, while Scott is tied for 10th in the CIS with 13 goals. With another Mustangs win, goaltender Kelly Campbell moved to a tie for fifth place in the CIS with a record of 10-5 on the season. Campbell is also among the top in the CIS in save percentage (.940) where she ranks fourth and total saves (583) where she ranks second.

This is a big weekend for the Mustangs, who currently rank fourth in the OUA, as the team battles for much needed points in their race to the playoffs.

Mustangs at Waterloo

The Mustangs (16-6) will start off their weekend by traveling to down the highway to take on the Waterloo Warriors (8-14). This season the Mustangs are 2-0 against the Warriors and will be looking to sweep the season series with a win on Saturday.

The Warriors are coming off a two game winning streak after beating both UOIT and York by a score of 2-0 last weekend. The Mustangs will have to watch out for senior forward Kelly MacLean who leads the Warriors offence with 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists).

Goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis has not allowed a goal in two games and looks to keep her shout-out streak alive against the Stangs. Bouwhuis, the sophomore from Orillia, Ont., is 8-11 between the pipes this season with a goals against average of 2.25 and a save percentage of .925. The Mustangs will look to Scott, who leads all skaters with four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in the season series against Waterloo, to end Bouwhuis’s shout-out streak.

With the playoffs around the corner and the Stangs racing for positioning, look for the team to be fired up and ready to go on Saturday afternoon.

Puck drop is scheduled for Saturday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m. at the CIF Arena in Waterloo.

Mustangs vs. Queen’s- Sunday, February 3 at 4:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena

The final regular season home game is a big one for the Mustangs (16-6) as they take on the Queen’s Golden Gaels (17-5) at Thompson Arena. With the Gaels ranked third and the Mustangs ranked fourth in the OUA, this game could have major playoff implications for both teams.

Although these two teams head into this weekend’s action separated by three points (Queens 36, Western 33), the Mustangs have the edge over the Gaels with a 2-0 regular season record in head to head play.

Led by forwards Morgan McHaffie and Taryn Pilon, the Gaels are a team with a lot of offensive fire power. McHaffie has 31 points on the season (11 goals, 20 assists) and sits in sixth place in the CIS scoring race, while Pilon has 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) which ties her for 12th. Along with two of the country’s top point leaders, Queen’s leads the CIS in shots with 804. The Gaels also possess one of the top power play units in the CIS and leads all CIS teams with 27 power play goals.

Look for the Mustangs to rely on strong team play as well as their all-star goaltender Kelly Campbell to help stop the Gaels offensive attack and leave Thompson arena with the win for the last time this regular season.

Puck drop is scheduled for Sunday February 3 at 4:00 p.m. at Thompson arena. You can also catch the game live online at http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/4506/
