Playoff Preview: Mustangs host Game 1 vs Toronto Wednesday at 7

Mustangs vs. Toronto Varsity Blues

This Wednesday February , 13, 2013 the Mustangs women’s hockey team begins their playoff run as they get set to face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in  a best of three series in the OUA Quarterfinals.  The Mustangs and Varsity Blues have faced each off against each other twice in the regular season with each team picking up one win a piece in the two contests.

The young Mustangs have one of the leagues more powerful offensive attacks, they rank in the top 10 in the CIS in goals, assists and goals per game. The team is also one of the county’s top defensive teams highlighted by its goaltenders. The Mustangs goaltenders rank first in saves with a combined 823, first in save percentage with a combined .941 and 11th in goals against with a combined average of 2.01.

The Mustangs offence is led by Stacey Scott and Katelyn Gosling, they lead the team with 27 points (14 goals and 13 assists) and 26 (7 goals, 19 assists) points respectively. Scott is the team leader in goals with 15 goals on the season and is tired for 14 place in CIS scoring, while Gosling leads the team in assists with 19 and is tied for 19 place in the CIS scoring race. Forwards Kendra Deller and Kryshanda Green have also been major contributors offensively this season, Deller has 21 points (9 goals, 22 assists) and Green has 20 points (9 goals and 11 assists) on the year.

In net the Stangs rely on the play of Kelly Campbell who is one of the top netminders in the country.  Campbell has the countries fourth best save percentage with .942, has stopped the second most shots in the country stopping 667 shots to go along with a goals against average of 2.04. Campbell has been a force in net for the Stangs all season and will be looking to continue her strong play in the postseason.

Leading the way for the Varsity Blues is senior forward Kelly O’Hanlon who is tied with Scott for 14th in CIS scoring with 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists), and O’Hanlon is also the team leader in both goals and assists. Chipping in in a major way in her first season is freshman forward Taylor Day. Day is second on the team with 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) in her first year with the Varsity Blues.

Goaltending for the Varsity Blues has been a team effort all season with junior Nicole Kesteris and sophomore Krista Funke splitting time between the pipes all season. The duo has a combined goals against of 2.47 and a save percentage of .922.
