Western hosts Windsor tonight at 7 PM in final regular season home game

Tonight marks the final home game of the regular season, and the Western Mustangs men's hockey team would like to honour and pay tribute to their senior players for their dedication and contributions to the Mustangs men’s hockey team over their career.

Mustang’s goaltender Josh Unice is finishing up his fourth year of eligibility at Western. Unice came to the Mustangs after playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. The Holland, Ohio, native has been a force between the pipes and has established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the country, last season he was selected as the top goaltender in the OUA West as well as a first team OUA all-star.

In four seasons between the pipes for Western Unice has a regular season record of 43-17-0 along with an 8-3-0 record in the post season including a 2-1 record at the CIS University Cup. Unice has also racked up seven shutouts with a goals against average of 2.90 and a save percentage of .905.

Tyler Cuthbert has been a defensive force on the back end for the Mustangs since his arrival this season. Cuthbert hails from Omemee, Ontario and prior to joining the Mustangs played for the St. Mary's Huskies of the CIS. Cuthbert has been a great addition to the Mustangs defence. 

Over his CIS career Cuthbert has played in 116 regular season games, earning three goals and 18 assists for 21 points to go along with 210 minutes in penalties.

Assistant captain Geoff Killing has been a key member of the Mustangs defensive unit throughout his CIS career. Killing is an Embro, Ontario native who came to the Mustangs after spending five seasons with the Belleville Bulls of the OHL. Killing has had an accomplished hockey career; he was a member of the Bulls Memorial Cup winning team, a member of the 2008-2009 Mustangs OUA championship team, he played for Canada in 2011 in the World University Games and was selected as a First Team OUA All-Star in 2009-2010.

Killing has spent five seasons with the Mustangs and in that time has played in 126 regular season and 36 playoff games, including six games at the CIS University Cup. During his Western career he’s amassed 19 goals and 34 assists for 53 points, and also has 92 penalty minutes.

Adam McKee is a London, Ontario native who came to the Mustangs from the London Nationals of the WOHL. McKee is a well accomplished hockey player, he is a two time First Team WOHL All-Star, former WOHL Player of the Year, former WOHL top scorer and former WOHL Ability and Sportsmanship Award winner and in his last season with the Nationals McKee posted a 100 point season. McKee has provided the Mustangs with solid play and great leadership throughout his career.

McKee enters tonight’s game having played in 76 regular season and 15 playoff games for the Mustangs, with a total of six goals, 22 assists, 28 points, and only 10 penalty minutes.

Mustangs captain Jason Furlong has played in and around London his entire career. Furlong, a London native, attended Oakridge Secondary School and played for the Strathroy Rockets of the WOHL prior to his career at Western. Since joining the Mustangs Furlong has been a constant source of leadership and strong two-way play, and has been a great leader on and off the ice.

Over his five seasons in purple and white Furlong has played in 136 regular season and 26 playoff games for the Mustangs, including six games at the CIS University Cup. In that time Furlong has racked up 36 goals and 50 assists for 86 points, as well as 90 minutes in penalties.

Andrew Eastman is from Sharon, Ontario and has been a valued member of the Mustangs throughout his time with the team. Eastman is a well-traveled hockey player having played for the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL, the Barrie Colts of the OHL, before heading overseas to Germany and suiting up for the Landshut Cannibals and Bad Toelz EC.

In two seasons with the Mustangs Andrew has played in 50 regular season games and 11 in the post-season, including three at the CIS University Cup. He’s totalled seven goals and 23 assists for 30 points, while adding 38 penalty minutes.

Defenceman Brandon Greenside has also played all over Canada during his hockey career and prior to joining the Mustangs Greenside spent time playing in the QMJHL with the Moncton Wildcats and the OHL with the Guelph Storm, Sudbury Wolves  and home town London Knights. Greenside grew up in London, Ontario and attended Saunders Secondary School.

Over his three seasons with the Mustangs Brandon has played in 52 regular season and 16 playoff games, including two games at the CIS University Cup. In that span he has recorded seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points, along with 44 penalty minutes.

The Mustangs would like to thank all our seniors for their commitment, time, effort and skill. For those that are leaving the team the Mustangs wish them the best of luck moving on, and they will be missed. 

Mustangs vs. Windsor Lancers

In a rematch from last Friday the (21-5) Mustangs host the (16-9) Windsor Lancers. Following last weekend’s 7-3 home loss to the Mustangs the Lancers will be out to exact some revenge and in the process pick up two much needed points as this will be the final game of the regular season for both teams. The regular season series between these two teams is tied 1-1 this season with the road team picking up the victory in both of the previous two meetings.

Between the pipes the Lancers have relied on goaltender Parker Van Buskirk who has appeared in 23 of the teams 26 games this season. This season Van Buskirk has goals against of 2.91 and a save percentage of .907. Offensively the team is led by forwards Spencer Pommells and Evan Stibbard. Pommells leads the team in points with 37 (9 goals, 28 assists) his 28 assists are also a team lead, while fellow forward Stibbard is second on the team with 36 points (18 goals, 18 assists) he also leads the Lancers with 18 goals on the season.

Puck drop is scheduled Saturday February, 9th, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
