Mustangs battle back to win against Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont.- The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team stepped onto the court tonight for their second last game of the OUA regular season, as yesterday’s game against Guelph was rescheduled due to weather, slightly prolonging their season.

In an effort to make their last few games outstanding, the Mustangs topped the Waterloo Warriors tonight 3-1. This breaks Western’s three games losing streak and brings their season record to 9-8. With that record, the Mustangs sit in sixth place in the OUA.

Set scores were: 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20

Leading the Mustangs was captain Rebecca Oxland with 10 kills with nine digs and a game high 15 points. Following close was middle Danielle Marshall with 12 kills on 24 attempts and 14 points. Libero Stephanie Kantzos contributed 24 digs to Western’s winning effort.

Stepping onto the court, the Mustangs looked to fight off their losing streak, but were overwhelmed in the first set. The Warriors defended their home court well, and Western was left behind. The set would end with Waterloo coming out on top 25-20.

The first set would be the last the Western Mustangs would sacrifice as they came back onto the court with a new energy. Challenging Waterloo’s every move, the two teams rallied for each point with the Mustangs just sneaking past the Warriors 25-22 to even the game at one set apiece.

Tied set for set, the two teams became competitive trying to win back their lost sets. The Mustangs showed new power as they dominated the play in the third set and managed to earn the 25-19 set victory.

The fourth set would be the final as Western showed stamina similar to the third set. With the game in their sights, the Mustangs continued to control the play and were able to take the set 25-20, giving them the 3-1 victory.

Leading the Waterloo Warriors was Shannon Lodoen with 8 kills on 40 attempts, and a team high of 12.5 points.

The Mustangs return to the court tomorrow for their last game of the 2012-2013 OUA regular season when they will challenge the Guelph Gryphons. Game time has been rescheduled to 1:00 p.m.
